India's power orders surged at the end of 2024: grid upgrades and solar expansion accelerate in tandem.

Among them, the transmission and distribution projects mainly come from the Middle East and SAARC region countries. Indo Tech Transformers received an order worth Rs 323 million to supply three 192 MVA transformers to a customer, planned to be completed by the end of 2025. Jyoti Ltd obtained a purchase order from Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) to supply 420 sets of 11kV vacuum circuit breaker panels, valued at about Rs 329 million. Texmaco Rail undertook nine 132kV transmission line projects from the Chhattisgarh state transmission company, with a total length of 291 kilometers and an order value of approximately Rs 1.874 billion.In addition, Sharika Enterprises has received orders from JSW Group for underground cables in Karnataka and Maharashtra, totaling 82.9 million rupees; Valiant Communications, meanwhile, has secured an order from the Andhra Pradesh transmission company for a communication and protection system, valued at 81.2 million rupees. At its board meeting on December 18, Power Grid Corporation (PGCIL) approved the issuance of bonds not exceeding 42.5 billion rupees to raise funds for investment in power transmission and transformation assets. This series of announcements shows that grid companies in India, from state-level to national-level, are all carrying out equipment expansion and line construction to enhance transmission capacity and reliability.

Solar PV Plant Commissionings and Orders Advance in Parallel

ACME Solar Holdings announced that its four subsidiaries in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district have commissioned a total of 1,023.05 MW of solar capacity, part of its 1,200 MW project under construction. This brings the company’s total operational renewable energy capacity to 2,363 MW. NTPC Green Energy is likewise commissioning partial capacity at its solar PV projects in Gujarat: 37.5 MW has been commissioned at the 200 MW Sadla project, and another 30 MW has achieved commercial operation at the 150 MW Mesanka project.

In the EPC segment, Gensol Engineering has received an order awarded by NTPC Renewable Energy for a 225 MW (AC side) grid-connected solar PV plant at Phase III of the GSECL Solar Park in Gujarat. The order is valued at approximately 8.97 billion rupees and includes three years of operation and maintenance services. In addition, Gensol has won a 22 MW ground-mounted solar project for a steel enterprise in Punjab, with a contract value of 880 million rupees. Solidus Techno Power has also secured a 29 MWp solar EPC order in Rajasthan, expected to generate 47 million kWh of clean electricity annually and reduce more than 42,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Rooftop Solar and Agri-PV Drive Distributed Applications

In the distributed segment, Jakson Group has received a 2 billion rupee contract from OMC Power in Uttar Pradesh to deploy around 50 MW of rooftop solar across all 75 districts of the state. This is considered one of the largest single orders in India’s commercial and industrial rooftop solar sector to date. Tata Power Renewable Energy has partnered with Canara Bank to provide financing solutions for residential rooftop solar under the “PM Surya Ghar” scheme, lowering the barrier to installation.Agrivoltaics is also an important direction. Servotech Renewable Power System secured a contract from UPNEDA for approximately 1,100 grid-connected solar agricultural pumps, valued at INR 310 million, covering manufacturing, installation, and a five-year maintenance warranty. RMC Switchgears also received an order worth a total of INR 900 million to supply 5,000 solar agricultural pumps to Maharashtra. These projects aim to promote green energy use in the agricultural sector.

Wind and hybrid energy projects receive further attention

In the wind power segment, Inox Wind announced a 60 MW order from Serentica Renewables to supply 3 MW-class wind turbine generators, with delivery planned for the first half of 2025 and operations and maintenance services included. Indian industrial company IMFA signed a binding term sheet with JSW Green Energy to invest approximately INR 833 million in a hybrid project comprising 50 MW of solar and 100 MW of wind capacity, thereby securing 70 MW of capacity and a 25-year power purchase agreement to meet its own clean electricity needs. Such hybrid projects help improve the stability of renewable energy output and increase the supply of green power.

Frontier cooperation and research projects

NTPC signed a strategic cooperation agreement with U.S.-based Clean Core Thorium Energy to jointly explore the development and application of the thorium-based fuel "ANEEL" in pressurized heavy water reactors. This technology still requires approval from both governments and remains some distance from commercialization. Meanwhile, Waaree Energies announced a collaboration with IIT Bombay to build a next-generation perovskite solar cell R&D platform, advancing the reserve of high-efficiency photovoltaic technologies.

Impact on the energy system

The above developments imply changes at multiple levels for India's energy system. First, the substantial growth in orders for transmission and distribution equipment and line projects indicates that grid companies are advancing the layout of delivery corridors for renewable-rich regions. Looking ahead, India's power sector is entering a phase in which "power generation asset construction" and "grid equipment upgrading" are accelerating simultaneously. Based on order trends at the end of 2024, demand for power transmission and transformation equipment and renewable energy installations will continue to remain high over the next 2 to 5 years. At the same time, with the growth of electric vehicles, cooling, and electrification loads, investment in smart distribution networks will also increase. If the technology costs of energy storage, microgrids, and hydrogen energy continue to decline, they will further enhance the flexibility of the power system.
